This video is just the basics about electronic components. It explains what they look like, what they actually do, and how they work. Let's start with one of the most common components: the resistor. In this case, we have a one thousand ohm resistor, which can be determined by the color bands on it. The function of a resistor can be understood using a water analogy. If you have a pipe with water flowing through it and a section of that pipe is narrowed down, it will restrict the flow of water. Similarly, a resistor limits the flow of electricity or current. In the water analogy, the pressure of the water represents the voltage, and the flow of water represents the current. The construction of a resistor usually involves a ceramic tube coated with either metal or carbon. The thicker the carbon coating, the higher the resistance value. Resisters are usually color-coded, with carbon film resistors being beige and metal film resistors being blue. Resisters are used to limit current flow and to adjust resistance for various applications. They can be used with LEDs to prevent them from burning out and with capacitors for time delay functions. Variable resistors allow resistance to be varied by adjusting the position of a wiper on a carbon track. Moving on to capacitors, they are composed of a layer of insulating material with conductive surfaces on each side. In the water flow analogy, they can be compared to a chamber with a diaphragm that flexes in response to electrical charge. Capacitors can hold an electric charge or allow a small amount of energy to pass through in alternating currents.
