Music, good morning everyone and welcome to today's class, which is called "Tax Credits for Families with Children." I'm your instructor, April Qatari. I have been preparing tax returns since 1993 when I was first licensed as a preparer in Oregon. I began my first tax season just a couple of months later in 1994. However, during my first season in the industry, I could not prepare tax returns because I wasn't licensed in Oregon. I only handled reception, transmittal, printing, and assembly of tax returns due to state law restrictions at the time. This allowed me to learn about both the front and back office of tax services before actually becoming a tax preparer. To become a tax preparer, I had to take an 80-hour course as mandated by Oregon law. This course provided basic education on dependency filing status, earned income credit, and other related topics. After completing the course, I sat for the state exam and passed with a satisfactory score. With my certification, I started preparing tax returns. However, it was not until I began studying for Oregon's LTC (Licensed Tax Consultant) exam that I gained a higher level of certainty and confidence in my knowledge. In Oregon, all tax preparers are required to obtain a license that involves completing a minimum of 80 hours of education, passing a state exam, and gaining a minimum of 1100 hours of experience over two years as an apprentice. This prepares us to handle more complex tax issues and progress to a higher level of consultancy. What's interesting about the consultancy exam is that it covers similar topics as the basic preparer exam but requires a deeper understanding.
