On April 27th, the US Senate unanimously issued a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations. It is unusual for the United States Senate to unanimously agree on much of anything, but in this instance, every United States Senator, from Ted Cruz and Tom Cotton to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, were in harmony. They all signed a letter condemning the United Nations for attempting to advance an "anti-Israel agenda." The signatories of this letter complain that the United Nations' actions have reinforced the broader scourge of anti-Semitism, thus receiving condemnation from the entirety of the United States Senate. The impetus for the letter, which was initially circulated by Marco Rubio, a Republican from Florida, and Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, is to affirm the Senate's support for the recent statements made by Nikki Haley, the UN Ambassador under Trump. Nikki Haley has been commended for saying, "It is the UN's anti-Israel bias that is long overdue for change." The long-standing anti-Israel bias alleged by the UN consists of a resolution passed in December of last year, which the US abstained from voting on. This was the first resolution of its kind since 2002, prompting questions as to why the UN has seemingly fixated on Israel only in the last 15 years. The fact that all 100 senators signed onto this letter is significant in terms of public relations for the Israeli government. Israeli PM Netanyahu's official account tweeted on April 28th, thanking all 100 US senators for standing up for Israel at the UN. This bipartisan support gives some level of legitimacy to Israel's claims that they are unduly penalized by international organizations.
